Montevideo Hosted International Workshop on Security by Design to Strengthen Cybersecurity

From November 20 to 22 2024, cybersecurity professionals, policymakers, and technology experts from Uruguay participated in the LAC4 Workshop “Security by Design”. This landmark event equipped organisations and participants with the knowledge and tools to embed robust security measures into the design phase of digital and physical products and services.

Organised in collaboration with AGESIC and inspired by successful European and international strategies, the workshop focused on the best practices from global experts (Sergio Bryton from Portugal and Giorgi Pirveli from Georgia) to adapt international frameworks to local needs, and work collaboratively to build a more secure digital future.

The SdB Workshop covered topics such as:

  • Proactive Cybersecurity Measures: Participants explored standards such as OWASP’s Secure Development Lifecycle, Microsoft’s Security Development Lifecycle, and NIST 800-160, among others.
  • National and Regional Collaboration: The workshop fostered dialogue and partnerships among cybersecurity professionals both at a national level and across borders, leveraging regional strengths to combat emerging threats.
  • Cost Efficiency: Emphasizing the benefits of addressing security in the design phase, the workshop demonstrated how early-stage investment reduces long-term costs and mitigates risks.

The workshop highlights the pivotal role of the European Union in supporting LAC’s digital transformation. By sharing technical expertise, proven frameworks, and case studies, the EU underscores its commitment to fostering resilience and trust in the region’s rapidly growing digital ecosystems. Uruguay, the host country, stands as a beacon of innovation and leadership in adopting these principles, further solidifying its position as a regional cybersecurity hub.
