Cybersecurity Bootcamp Focused on Technical Trainings and Teamwork in Santo Domingo

Cybersecurity Bootcamp for 60 girls concluded this week in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic. Bootcamp, designed to equip girls aged 13-16 with practical IT, cybersecurity and teamwork skills offered participants practical hands-on experiences ranging from cloud technologies and operation systems to capture-the-flag competition.

The programme began with a focus on fundamentals: students learnt about cloud concepts and software. Operation systems like Windows, Linux and macOS were discussed over the course of a week to understand the set-up and configuration, troubleshooting, but also security aspects such as firewalls and understanding security flaws.

Participants also learned how to pick up information from networks, how to intercept these networks and find security flaws to understand between secure and safe protocols compared to dangerous actions. The Bootcamp concluded with a capture-the-flag challenge to underscore teamwork, improve problem-solving and translate technical expertise into practice and opportunities.

Bootcamp was led by Allan Ild and Ain Ellam, EU CyberNet Experts and staff of Rapla County Vocational College of Estonia. LAC4 with the support from the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL), Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic (MINERD), Ibero-American University (UNIBE) and the Research Center for Feminine Action (CIPAF) aimed to inspire young girls to explore the world of cybersecurity and create pathways for more diverse and resilient cybersecurity community in Latin America and the Caribbean region.
