Women in CyberTech Camp@LAC4 2024 Roundup

The second Women In CyberTech Camp@LAC4 2024 concluded yesterday in Santo Domingo after three days of practical workshops, networking and peer-to-peer learning in cyber security.

The first day of Camp was led by Sille Arikas, who introduced basics and fundamental concepts of building and developing Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) capabilities, including how to achieve cost- and operational effectiveness. She also introduced possible proactive and reactive services a team could offer for increased added value, and discussed case studies.

In addition, the methods of open source intelligence (OSINT) were discussed, such as threat intelligence tooling and service design to implement OSINT methodologies in institutional cyber security: gathering publicly available information, analysing data, organizing insights and observations, verifying the authenticity of collected data and utilizing it for drawing meaningful conclusions of publicly available information that could be used by attackers for making informed decisions to prevent attacks.

During the second day, led by Silvia Väli, the participants dove into the world of assembly code and debugged binary files on x86-64 bit architecture after getting familiar with basic concept of buffer overflow. Conducted exercises challenged participants to write their own shellcode by using various techniques, and the new knowledge of assembly language was immediately tested out and put to good use when exploiting the classic buffer overflow vulnerabilities.

On the third day, Priska Pietra led a workshop providing an overview of the architecture of the Android OS and methods for app analysis, learning the use of different tools and techniques through practical exercises.

Taking place in Santo Domingo, Women in CyberTech Camp@LAC4 2024 is a three-day technical training event of practical workshops, networking, peer-to-peer learning in cyber security principles, tools and methodologies for women working in CSIRTs, critical public and private sector organisations on information security and incident response in the Caribbean countries of Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and CARICOMS IMPACS.

The Camp was conducted by Sille Arikas, Silvia Väli and Priska Pietra, and organized by LAC4 and EU CyberNet in cooperation with the Delegation of the European Union to the Dominican Republic.

The accession ceremony took place during the IV EU-Ecuador Security Roundtable in Quito, Ecuador on 4th December 2024.
