“Organised in supporting Suriname’s national digital strategy, the training enhanced the security of public sector digital service and contributed to data protection. As government networks become increasingly interconnected, they also face more sophisticated cyber threats that put essential public services at risk. This hands-on technical training was designed to provide Suriname’s public sector ICT professionals with technical blueprints necessary to build a more resilient, sustainable and vendor-neutral security architecture using open-source technologies to mitigate cyber threats and vulnerabilities.” – Leonardo Ortega, LAC4 Project Manager.  

The Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Miriam Mac Intosh, mentioned that ‘Digital transformation presents great opportunities for Suriname, but also brings new challenges in the field of cybersecurity – and that is why these trainings are important.’ 

EUD Representative, Charlotte De Grauwe, highlighted that the hands-on cybersecurity workshop supported Suriname’s National Digital Strategy 2023-2030 and deepened the cooperation under the EU-LAC Digital Alliance, strengthening the security and resilience of government digital services. 

Over the course of three days, participants from a wide array of ministries– from Ministry of Defence to the Office of the President and Vice-president, engaged in instructor-led deep dives, technical labs and architecture design workshops that also included an overview of the cybersecurity threat landscape for Suriname and the region. Agenda bridged gap between technical execution and governance, ensuring that practical defense measures like perimeter security, network segmentation, end-point hardening and identity management are fully aligned with international and European frameworks.  

Training was led by EU CyberNet experts Ensar Seker and Shiva Bissessar.
